My first time fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon was in 2014 on the Gander River. Since then I have fished many rivers on the island of Newfoundland but had heard story after story of fishing in Labrador which sounded entirely different than anything I had experienced on the island. This year, I decided it was time to see for myself, if the stories were "big fish stories". I contacted several lodges and decided to book with Big Land Lodge. And to say that the experience exceeded my expectations, would be an understatement of vast proportions. If the sight of the Pinware River wasn't enough by itself, the fishing was amazing! From beginner to "fish whisperer", this place is in a class of its own. The river was full of fish and while they kept us guessing about where they would hold depending on the changing water levels, they came to play, and fight. Big Salmon. Bigger than I had seen and certainly bigger than I had ever hooked. My guide, Reg, was first class. In fact, if you have the good fortune to be paired up with him, you will learn that ways of an expert fly fisher. The lodge is a beautiful and relaxing place. You can almost feel your blood pressure drop, the minute you walk in the front door. The bed was as good as the best bed I have slept in at any Hilton property globally... and I have experienced more than a few. The staff keep the place spotless and prepare meals that, well, are just excellent. Most importantly though, this place is accessible... just off the highway. Would I recommend Big Land Lodge? Without hesitation. In a minute. I booked next year's visit immediately and can't wait to experience this place and all it has to offer again.
